Is granite cheaper than quartz?
Usually, yes. At our shop granite is the starting price point and quartz typically costs more. Many shoppers assume the opposite, because quartz is engineered and granite is "real stone." If your budget is the deciding factor, granite is normally where we point you first, and there are always clearance and discounted granite slabs in the yard.
How often does granite need to be sealed?
Not yearly, despite what the internet says. iDesign Granite is a certified Dry-Treat applicator, and every natural stone top we fabricate is sealed in our shop with a professional-grade sealer rated for up to 25 years. The stone dries overnight after cutting and is sealed the next morning, under shop conditions. This matters because the industry's dirty secret is job-site sealing: many fabricators hand the sealer to the install crew, the expensive product gets a token pass or gets skipped, and the granite stains within a year. We learned this the hard way. In our early years, job-site sealing produced exactly those stain calls, so sealing moved into our shop, we got factory-certified on Dry-Treat products, and the stain calls stopped. These days the stained granite we see comes from other shops' installs, and we get called to fix it.
Granite pros and cons, honestly
Granite is great at:
heat resistance, scratch resistance, one-of-a-kind natural patterns, and price. It is the affordable way into real stone.
Granite's honest downsides:
it is porous, so it depends on good sealing (ours is done in-shop, which removes most of this risk). And certain granite looks, especially the busy brown patterns of the 2000s, can date a kitchen. Current buyers lean toward lighter, calmer granites with thin veining.
Best rooms for granite:
kitchens, outdoor kitchens (granite handles weather well), laundry rooms, and high-traffic baths.
Choosing your granite slab
Granite has no brands; quality comes from the block and the importer. We buy from distributors who have consistently sent us good material for years and quality-check slabs before shipping. You pick your exact slab in our yard, around 500 slabs in stock across all materials, and before we fabricate natural stone we ask you to run your hands over your slab: natural fissures, pits, and texture variation are part of granite, and we want you to know your stone, not a sample. Then you approve a digital layout showing exactly where the pattern falls before we cut.

Can you use leftover granite from my slab for other projects?
In-stock granite is priced by the square foot, so you pay for what your project uses and there is no leftover to keep. If you want granite for a small project, ask about [remnants], offcuts from previous jobs that are ideal for vanities and laundry rooms.
